Are you sure this isn`t a 94 explorer?
No big deal. This is kinda a common problem with the A4LD. The 1-2,&2-3 shifts are mechanical.
Meaning that a detent (TV) cable, vaccuum modulator, and governor determine when and how firm it shifts. We can rule out the cable and modulator, cause it is worse cold. That leaves you with the gov. If the fluid was getting old and what I`d call laquered, chances are good your fluid change will take care of the problem. The gov assembly is fussy on these things, and the colder the fluid is the thicker it is. Once it warms up and the fluid thins out the centrifugal valve in the gov can move easier, thus the higher shift goes away. Same applies if the fluid is getting old and stuff`s getting gummy. So I`d drive it and see, otherwise you have to pull the transfer case to get to the gov assembly. If you go thru all that I`d get a whole new one from Ford, I think their pretty cheap. I`m not big on additives, some can do nasty stuff, but the one I use is called Lubeguard. This is good stuff and OEM Endorsed. It can help with stick valves and such. The NAPA stores around here carry it. You need the stuff in the red bottle. Wouldn`t hurt to throw a bottle in now that you changed fluid.
