Hello Twopop,
Are you positive it`s hunting between 2-3 and 3-4,
or is your lock-up torque converter cycling.
My guess would be that lock-up is hunting in and out. First two things I would check is your throttle position sensor, and mass air flow sensor. 2-3 shift is mechanical (not computer controlled) 3-4 shift is computer controlled. If it`s hunting, and not slipping there`s a good chance it`s electrical or at least not an internal trans problem. To answer Bubba, there is a vaccuum modulator on this one, but if there was no vaccuum or the mod was bad, you`d get high shifts. Hope this helps Brokenwrench

Can you help me to? in reply to Brokenwrench, 09-14-2005 06:00:47
Brokenwrench, you sound like you know your stuff so can I ask you one too? I have an 84 explorer. It wont shift quick enough. It has to start winding much more than I like before it will shift. It is very bad in cold weather not very bad to not noticable in hot weather. I changed the fluid last week but havent had a cool enough moring to really tell if it helped yet. As far as I can tell it doesnt slip at all.

any advice would be appreciated.

Chuck

Hello Play,
Are you sure this isn`t a 94 explorer? No big deal. This is kinda a common problem with the A4LD. The 1-2,&2-3 shifts are mechanical. Meaning that a detent (TV) cable, vaccuum modulator, and governor determine when and how firm it shifts. We can rule out the cable and modulator, cause it is worse cold. That leaves you with the gov. If the fluid was getting old and what I`d call laquered, chances are good your fluid change will take care of the problem. The gov assembly is fussy on these things, and the colder the fluid is the thicker it is. Once it warms up and the fluid thins out the centrifugal valve in the gov can move easier, thus the higher shift goes away. Same applies if the fluid is getting old and stuff`s getting gummy. So I`d drive it and see, otherwise you have to pull the transfer case to get to the gov assembly. If you go thru all that I`d get a whole new one from Ford, I think their pretty cheap. I`m not big on additives, some can do nasty stuff, but the one I use is called Lubeguard. This is good stuff and OEM Endorsed. It can help with stick valves and such. The NAPA stores around here carry it. You need the stuff in the red bottle. Wouldn`t hurt to throw a bottle in now that you changed fluid.
Hope this helps Brokenwrench

Look and see if it has a modulating valve. If so it should have a vacuum hose going to it.Maybe they don't even use em anymore,I don't know.
