Dug: Your first year garden statment has a flaw as does Chris. "Letting it go to WEEDS". Do you know that each weed that goes to seed is aproximately 1,000 new weeds for next year. What you need is three garden patches to rotate. One for current garden, one for fallow and one for Buckwheat. The Buckwheat patch is next years garden. Buckwheat, the best weed control a gardener can have, but you must plow it down before it goes to seed. Buckwheat is so agressive it will crowd out every weed you have, and plowed down a great source of fertilizer. There may be crops other than Buckwheat better suited to your area. All you are trying to gain here is something so agressive it gets the jump on every weed, then matures evenly. You must however plow it under before it goes to seed or it will become your worst weed. Since your good better half was critical of your tillage. I just thought I'd give you the jump on weeds. She will enjoy gardening more and you will not be accused on manufacturing weeds. Plus it will convince her how valuable the tractor really is. The PR is in your ball park, handle it as you will. You will do all this from tractor seat and wife will be amazed with her weed control.
