Well, maybe not my greatest, but certainly something to be proud of...

I plowed my first garden tonight. About 50' x 50'. Of course my wife was a little concerned about the "S" shaped rows. I explained to her that when a garden is plowed the first year an "S" shaped row is a necessity because it will slow down any potential erosion. After the first year, the natural flow of water can be evaluated and the garden plowed accordingly in succeeding years. I don't think she bought it.

Next step is the tiller, then on to the seeds so I can grow lots of veggies and melons for the deer and turkey to eat before letting the garden go to the weeds and completely giving up.

Dug, the first year gardener

That is a fair sized garden. Be sure to plant plenty of Zuchini squash, probably a dozen hills of em oughta do it.

Dug,
Don't go out of your way to feed the critters! Put up a small wire about 3-4" off the ground on insulated stakes and put a fencer on it. Warn the wife, kids and dog a couple times. Dog will probably get it the first time the wet nose touches the wire. The deer will rip up the fence the first time, but after that they usually get it. Keeps the racoons and skunks out of the corn pretty well.

I'm a third year gardener. Wonder how my new neigbors will react when I pull in to my new yard with my 60 and drop the 3-14s for a tenth of an acre garden...

If you keep ahead of the weeds the first year, you'll be a gardener for life. It's a wonderful thing, that gardening. It'll keep you sane.

Hi Dug,

You're one up on me.

I've never had a greatest accomplishment. Just a long and uneventful series of little screw-ups. :>(

The way I was told to plow strait was to focus on a point past where your going. Don't look back or fiddle around.

Dug: Your first year garden statment has a flaw as does Chris. "Letting it go to WEEDS". Do you know that each weed that goes to seed is aproximately 1,000 new weeds for next year. What you need is three garden patches to rotate. One for current garden, one for fallow and one for Buckwheat. The Buckwheat patch is next years garden. Buckwheat, the best weed control a gardener can have, but you must plow it down before it goes to seed. Buckwheat is so agressive it will crowd out every weed you have, and plowed down a great source of fertilizer. There may be crops other than Buckwheat better suited to your area. All you are trying to gain here is something so agressive it gets the jump on every weed, then matures evenly. You must however plow it under before it goes to seed or it will become your worst weed.

Since your good better half was critical of your tillage. I just thought I'd give you the jump on weeds. She will enjoy gardening more and you will not be accused on manufacturing weeds. Plus it will convince her how valuable the tractor really is.

The PR is in your ball park, handle it as you will. You will do all this from tractor seat and wife will be amazed with her weed control.

Gonna have to try that Buckwheat. Right now I just plow everything under and mechanically cultivate the heck out of it to keep ahead of them weeds.
Thanks!

Hugh, ya"ll might get away with that up there, but they outlawed us having Buckwheet coming out and keeping the weeds out of the garden back in 1865. Darned shame too, cause they didn"t have drive-by shootings back then, no aids, no four generations on assistance, and..... oh well, you get my point. Anyway, we just have to hoe (no pun intended) our gardens own here and hope for the best. Later, Harley

Harley: I'm sure Americans break laws that are much worse, than not being allowed to grow Buckwheat every day. Here I am giving Dug enough information to convince his wife he may need another tractor just to keep up with her gardening, and your trying to put a damper on it. Good heavens, what's this world comming to.

Just one more tractor? Shoot, I need one for the plow, already have it, need one for the disk I'm gonna buy, need another for the harrow, cause I've heard harrows are very, very important, need one to put yonder to provide a point of reference to keep my rows straight and need another for a reason yet to be determined.

Dug

Just remembered, need another for the bush hog to mow everything down when the weeds defeat my efforts...

I believe Buckwheat is aleopathic. It puts out a poison from its roots to suppress competing vegetation. If the deer find it you won't have to worry about plowing it under. They eat mine down to the stems.

In a month or a little more I will do my yearly deed of preparing a beautiful level, weed free, loose, nicely prepared garden area. I then turn it over to the wife - who plants things lovingly all over he** without really any system or pattern.
She then watches it grow for a while UNTIL
about late June or early July when I mow off everything that has overgrown the area (mainly tumbleweeds, cockleburs, grass, etc - then we wait again for the next year.....

Dug, what your wife fails to understand is that you can plant more seed on a crooked row than a straight one. Makes your garden bigger.
