A mysterious 2440

I'm looking at a JD 2440 that was advertised in the classifieds. I went to look at it a couple days ago and took some pictures. I forgot to note the serial numbers when I was there, but I called the seller and he said the S/N on the motor was 456xxxT, and the S/N on the RH side of the frame is 297xxxT. I'm confused about the tractor because I think that some parts are mis-matched. The seller claims it was bought at auction in 1984, and that it is a 1982 model. Supposedly, it was never repainted (which seems true based on the rusty condition of the sheet metal). I'm confused because the hood looks like something from a '70s 2440, as do the instruments (tach, ammeter, and fuel gauge). I thought that the '82 models had yellow "2440" numbers on black with black vertical stripes that fade out behind. The steering wheel is a short style, so that there is little clearance between the wheel and the throttle and Hi/Lo levers. I thought the 80s models had a taller steering wheel. Email me and I will send a link to my pics. The seller claims that he hasn't replaced any of the parts except the plastic cowl, and some other service on the PTO. I'm also curious about the "T" serial number. I presume this unit is a tall row crop version. The tractor has 15.5-38s on it which is taller than the usual 16.9-28s, and the front wheels are narrower than I've seen on 2440s and 2640s. Does anyone know about these differences? I don't want to get something that has lots of mismatched parts.
