A mysterious 2440

I'm looking at a JD 2440 that was advertised in the classifieds. I went to look at it a couple days ago and took some pictures. I forgot to note the serial numbers when I was there, but I called the seller and he said the S/N on the motor was 456xxxT, and the S/N on the RH side of the frame is 297xxxT. I'm confused about the tractor because I think that some parts are mis-matched. The seller claims it was bought at auction in 1984, and that it is a 1982 model. Supposedly, it was never repainted (which seems true based on the rusty condition of the sheet metal). I'm confused because the hood looks like something from a '70s 2440, as do the instruments (tach, ammeter, and fuel gauge). I thought that the '82 models had yellow "2440" numbers on black with black vertical stripes that fade out behind. The steering wheel is a short style, so that there is little clearance between the wheel and the throttle and Hi/Lo levers. I thought the 80s models had a taller steering wheel. Email me and I will send a link to my pics. The seller claims that he hasn't replaced any of the parts except the plastic cowl, and some other service on the PTO. I'm also curious about the "T" serial number. I presume this unit is a tall row crop version. The tractor has 15.5-38s on it which is taller than the usual 16.9-28s, and the front wheels are narrower than I've seen on 2440s and 2640s. Does anyone know about these differences? I don't want to get something that has lots of mismatched parts.

The Canadian 40 series and US 40 serie used different sheet metal for a while if memory serves. I'll have to look up when the changes were made. The Canadian 10,20,30 & 40 series were almost all Mannheim built.

The tag said it was a made in Dubuque. We've determined that the tractor is a 1978 model with a replacement engine. It is configured as a row crop tractor with the taller wheels.

The parts book lists a wheel option for 15.5x38 tires.

the reason for this tractor having TWO different numbers is that one is the ENGINE serial number and the other is the TRACTOR/CHASSIS serial number, the Tractor serial number being the one generally used to establish year built. the 297xxx number suggests it's a 1977 and that it is a DUBUQUE built tractor (which it will say on the serial number plate). I have a tractor which looks very much like the one in the other post, less ROPS and shinney paint job)

I think we've established that it is a 1978 tractor with a "crate" 1982 engine. Thanks everyone for your help.

First off, here's a picture of an early model 2440. This is a 1978 model. (I have the original sales invoice) I'll leave my email addy uncovered. If you're interesed, send me the serial #, and the engine block#, and I'll match them up with what info on 2440's I have. (I have a fairly substancial "library" on this model tractor) A 1982 model would be a Manhiem Germany built tractor, with the different hood/dash/stripes/ect. like you refered to.

Sounds to me like you have a "salvage tractor" built with various parts from several tractors. (Maybe a rebuilt roll-over for instance)
