It used to be recommended to change the gasket every third or fourth time the engine was opened up, unless the gasket became damaged. However, this was on side valve gas engines and probably on non-pressurised cooling systems. One manual I have reckons on decarbonising the head every 4000 miles! With an engine with oil and water pressure, you can get away with it, but it is not recommended. I would certainly not even try with a diesel, unless the gasket was a solid copper one! Regards, RAB
