Can anyone tell me if I have to replace the head gasket on my tractor head if I Take the head off again. I just got done rebuilding the head and put a new head gasket on, but now I have to tear The motor down again. Can I use the same one or do I have to buy a another new one?

It used to be recommended to change the gasket every third or fourth time the engine was opened up, unless the gasket became damaged.
However, this was on side valve gas engines and probably on non-pressurised cooling systems. One manual I have reckons on decarbonising the head every 4000 miles!
With an engine with oil and water pressure, you can get away with it, but it is not recommended.
I would certainly not even try with a diesel, unless the gasket was a solid copper one!

If it is an old low-compression gasoline engine, and you're frugal (cheap), there should be no problem re-using it. Spray both sides with a copper-bearing gasket spray, following their directions, or just as well, spray both sides with a couple of coats of some cheap aluminum spray paint from Wally World, allowing drying time between coats, and before assembly.

Torque to specs, and re-torque after warming it up.

I've done this often with good results.

(Of course, if you do this, you accept the responsibility for the outcome!)

Hey george, if it is still fully intact you may get away with it but any imperfections probably won't match up again and the metal around the combustion chambers has been compressed.

What does the head gasket cost $10-20?

Is it worth taking a chance?

Joe
