My guess is that you are under attack from Racoons. Like the Great Escape, only in reverse; the Great Egress. The females are persistent at this time of year to find a spot to have their kittens. Your barn must look quite cozy. My old farm in Maine was a Racoon magnet. We shot or live trapped 2 dozen over 10 years. The last group was a female that ripped through shingles and sheathing by the chimney. She had five kittens in the crawl space. We all met one hot summer night. I had taken to sleeping with my shotgun on the down stairs couch. Mom coon would take the kits out for nocturnal wanderings, and you could hear them on the roof. So at 3 a.m., out the door I went; buck naked, shot gun blazing in one hand, flashlight in the other! Not a pretty sight. Raccons everywhere.
Standing in the dewey grass, waiting for my vision and hearing to clear, I thought; "darn it, the cops will be here any minute." Back in the house and on the couch, sheet over my head. No cops. Ahh, country living! Good luck Norman, don't let this happen to you. Pray for squirrels. Jared
