slightly ot: selling parts w/ad

Just answered an ad in popular tractor mag for parts. Saw what I needed by part #, low price, I wanted to buy. I called told him I wanted to buy. He said since he was on cell he could not sell because he was out of town, I should call him back on xxxday or maybe xxxday he wasn't sure. I offered to put check in the mail so it would be there when he got home. He said he doesn't play games and I would have to be the first caller when he got home but others had called too. I kindly asked if hvaing my check in hand wasn't better than a phone promise but he wouldn't hear of it. Then he went on about how rare the part is and how he wouldhave no problem selling it. Duh! I was trying to buy it right then.
Was I wrong or rude? If you don't want to be bothered with inquiries why did he put his cell number in the ad? I know my check is not the same as cash but I have held things on a phone promise and had no shows. What am I suppsed to do? start calling every hour and hope I'm first when he gets home? The amount concerned is low so I am not afraid of sending my check. I know long distance is difficult but you don't have act like a jerk.
