Just answered an ad in popular tractor mag for parts. Saw what I needed by part #, low price, I wanted to buy. I called told him I wanted to buy. He said since he was on cell he could not sell because he was out of town, I should call him back on xxxday or maybe xxxday he wasn't sure. I offered to put check in the mail so it would be there when he got home. He said he doesn't play games and I would have to be the first caller when he got home but others had called too. I kindly asked if hvaing my check in hand wasn't better than a phone promise but he wouldn't hear of it. Then he went on about how rare the part is and how he wouldhave no problem selling it. Duh! I was trying to buy it right then. Was I wrong or rude? If you don't want to be bothered with inquiries why did he put his cell number in the ad? I know my check is not the same as cash but I have held things on a phone promise and had no shows. What am I suppsed to do? start calling every hour and hope I'm first when he gets home? The amount concerned is low so I am not afraid of sending my check. I know long distance is difficult but you don't have act like a jerk.

Redd, I don't know what to tell you. Getting ahold of anything rare/valuable and having people clamoring for it brings out the worst in some people. I run into this all the time. If he gets enough calls it won't matter what you offer him for it...he'll just keep upping the ante until he thinks he has played it out. Very frustrating as a buyer, I know. I've had it happen with everything from parts to real estate.
I make it plain to the sellers. Here is what I am willing to pay and here is where you can reach me. Then I walk. Warning in advance, though...I rarely get THAT item. I have to keep looking, but I like looking.

I can also tell you that I have occasionally sold something and had people call and inquire about it. I say "sorry it is sold" and end up with a sore ear from the phone being slammed down. People can be very rude. Hope you find your part!

Thanks for the therapy. You know, when mail order is involved, there is a certain amount of trust that needs to be present. If a buyer says he's sending the money then I guess the seller has to say its sold and wait and see. Unless everyone is going to have to go to the buyers place to buy it. Unfortunately I have seen this man's name in ads before, you would think he would know better. I never thought of the 'price too low' remorse he might be having.

Redd, Unless the part this er--a "gentleman" has is the last of its kind on the planet, then I'd be looking elsewhere. Why bother wasting your time with someone who is rude about taking YOUR money. I had a similar incident concerning a tractor I was VERY interested in buying. I called the phone number he had listed and was hung up on twice. I E.Mailed him and got no response, so assumed that either he realized his price might be too low or it had already sold or some other reason, but had not the guts to say the tractor was no longer available if that was the case. I see the same person has listed a couple other tractors for sale, but I wouldnt touch them even tho I have cash in hand, because I don't have to deal with rude people, and wont.

My guess is he learned after he placed the ad that his price was too low and that he could do much better. Now he is hedging in order not to have to sell to those who call from that ad. He wants to sell to someone who doesn't know about that ad and the low price, so he can ask more. If I were you, I would forget him no matter how badly you want the part.
