lawn mower recomendation for 2 ac. yard

A co-worker is currently looking for a new mower to replace his 16 HP Craftsman 42" cut. He has around 2 ac. of flat ground to mow. His basic requirements are that he needs to spend at or under $2000, hydrostatic drive, 18 HP and 48" cut. What NEW mower would you recommend for someone who doesn't work on their own equipment past oil changes. He was looking at the Deere L100 series, but he isn't sure that it is worth the money when he compared the physical looks to the competition. If they are all built about the same, he wonders why spend the money on a Deere if it’s probably going to break just as fast as the other models made by MTD? I’m not sure what to recommend as I have used the same JD 332 for the past 12 years and have not kept up with the new models.
