A co-worker is currently looking for a new mower to replace his 16 HP Craftsman 42" cut. He has around 2 ac. of flat ground to mow. His basic requirements are that he needs to spend at or under $2000, hydrostatic drive, 18 HP and 48" cut. What NEW mower would you recommend for someone who doesn't work on their own equipment past oil changes. He was looking at the Deere L100 series, but he isn't sure that it is worth the money when he compared the physical looks to the competition. If they are all built about the same, he wonders why spend the money on a Deere if it’s probably going to break just as fast as the other models made by MTD? I’m not sure what to recommend as I have used the same JD 332 for the past 12 years and have not kept up with the new models.

A friend just bought a 20 horse 48" cut L series Deere for $2300. It is hydro and turns very tight. The advantage I see to owning it to a MTD is the qualitey of the mowing deck. It has a steel deck and not a pressed one. I have a craftsman 15 horse mower. I like the tractor and it has plenty of power but the mower deck is JUNK. I don't own anything green but my next mower will be. Good luck.

I have one of the 'Walmart specials'; 17.5 hp Murray, hydrostatic, 48" cut. Had it 6 years, mow 2 acres with it. To date, 1 battery, 1 drive belt, and 1 spindle assembly (darn grease fitting down there, duh). Only cost me $1350. No matter the brand, thats a pretty good bargain.

Brian, I would recommend one of the AYP Craftsman tractors (917.xxx series), but must get the bigger ones, garden tractor, to any beef to them. I know a lot of people on this web site will give me grief for my recommendation, but I can't argue with my experience with these machines. I bought a 22.5 with a 50" deck in 1995 for around $3000, now same tractor is priced much less, my father in law bought a JD 318 the same year for almost $8000. He mows less than 1 acre of smooth lawn, I mow 3 acres much rougher lawn. He gave me a hard time that year told me it wouldn't hold up, junk, no good, etc. but here I am in 2003 no major problems. Trashed one spindel on a rock, broke a couple of blades, and rebuilt the carb last spring. Other than that only routine maintenance. His JD has the same service record but I am still $5000 to the good and I cut a lot more grass. I also have a smaller Simplicity and a Bolens that I am restoring and the Craftsman isn't built to quality, but for the money my experience has been quite good. It is true you get what you pay for but if you are only cutting grass on a "lawn" most any machine will work if taken care of.

Thanks,
Roon

Hello Brian, We mow about 3 acres. Two years ago I bought a used LESCO walk behind mower. It has a 14 hp. Kawasaki engine and cuts 48". The mower is strong enough to pull a velke (stand up rider) or a sulky. We paid $875 for it and the darn thing cuts circles around any of those old riding mowers we used to have. We have had MTD, Deere,
Snapper and Bolen. Frankly that stuff can't compare to LESCO or SKAG. Buy a good used walk behind. I don't believe you will regret it. The parts are easy to get, and the machines are built a lot tougher than Wally World Riders. The front and side edges of my mower deck are made of 1/4" plate.

Tell your co-worker to find a used commercial ZTR with a 4 or 5ft. deck. He can mow in half the time. If he buys a new one he can mow other people lawn and make money to make up the difference. I have had 6 ZTRs and currently have one of the worse ones built. I wouldn't trade it for a tractor style unless I could make money off the deal to buy another ZTR.

I just bought a Huskee (made by MTD - sold at TSC).

21hp, 46" cut, hydrostatic-like drive, manual pto for $1398. MTD makes numerous brands found at Wal-Mart, Lowes, Menards (here in Northern IN). This is my second MTD, first one lasted 4 years without anything major (one spindle lost a bearing, a change of belts, blades), then the transmission stopped working correctly - wouldn't stay in gear. New tranmission costs $350, so opted for a all new mower. When you look at the various MTD brands, you will eventually see that they have different feature/price points - independent of the brand - Huskee, Bolens, Yard-Man, Troy-built.

I used to have a JD318 that cost 4 times the price. I don't think it gave me 4 times the value, in that it didn't last 16 years without problems.

Hope this helps.
