The term semi-diesel refers to a diesel engine with lower compression than a normal diesel engine. The engine has to be heated externally on the hot bulb with a torch prior to starting. Direct injection is involved with delivery amount and timing controlled by the injector pump. That is how my 25 hp Fairbanks Morse Type Y operates. Waukesha Motors also built a semi diesel engine in the 30s that used the Hesselman design direct injection was involved along with spark plug ignition. In either case with pre-heating or spark plug ignition, the use of other starting aids may be involved.
