I am curious about the engine operation of the German Lanz "Bulldog" tractor single cylinder engine. According to Macmillan and Harrington, the engine was a 2 stroke unit burning "crude oil" after it warmed up. I have heard it described as "semi-diesel". Questions: (1)Did it depend on spark ignition after warming up? (2)Did it have fuel injection (into comb. chamber), or did it inhale a mixture of vaporized fuel and air? (3) M & H says fuel was vaporized by spraying on a hot bulb. What heated the bulb? (4) What initiated combustion (controlled ignition timing)? Was the English "Field Marshall" a similar engine?
