My experience suggests that your best bet is to improve the engine's tendency to start. The little "push", which spins the Bendix pinion back away from the flywheel, should instead be be the first stroke on a start. Think of it as if you were starting the engine with a hand crank. You want the ingnition and fuel systems to be giving you their best shot. (If you haven't already, try a little ether.) The early Bendix starter drive (inertia engaged) was a weak design compared with the solenoid type, or even the older manual yoke (both pre-engaged). They worked OK on engines fitted with a heavy flywheel, but not well on multi-cylinder engines that didn't have, or otherwise need, such a flywheel. And the problem was the one you have just described. That's why, even though they're simple, they're no longer widely used.
