Do you really have any experience towing or maintaining a diesel engine, or do you just rag out your dad's truck when he is not looking?

I won't comment on the DMax's heads, I just don't have any experience with that, but what I do have experience with is towing and working a truck to death. I wouldn't be so quick as to tell people to open their eyes, because the fact is the duramax just doesnt make enough power. That's right, not enough power (without spending a TON of money). 300hp is nice to have on tap, but 520ft-lbs of torque is plain weak when it comes to diesels (hp is for speed, tq is an engines tendency to rotate, or make sustained power. Remember, this thread is about towing, which means torque).

I would rather take an inline engine, with inherently more torque, than a V8 when I am forced to tow a heavy load. I would also choose an engine with a proven track record, which both the PSD and the cummins have, but the Dmax does not. Maybe in a few years it will, but I would not be willing to take that chance.

For my personal experiences, I have 2 Cummins ('97 and '00) and one Powerstroke ('00). My '97 5spd dodge makes 312hp at the wheels (we are talking over 350 flywheel hp), and 668ft-lbs of torque, also at the wheels, and those upgrades will run you $600 including guages, intake/exhaust uprgrades. Oh, and this is a mild enhacement for a cummins, which will handle over 500hp and 1000ft-lbs without a whimper.

I drive the Ford daily because I personally think it has a smoother ride and is a little more comfortable, but when I need to tow, I ALWAYS use a cummins. By the way, my '97 (my favorite, can't you tell?) has 176K HARD HARD miles on it, no real problems except a new clutch at 115Kmi, and it still makes 20-22mpg unloaded on the highway and 14-15 loaded with ~8K~lbs.

Neither my dodges or my ford have experienced any major problems, I just use each for what they are best suited.

Tell me who is the real performer.
