Regulator Question - What's the ceramic bar on the side for?

I've got a 6 volt Autolite generator here that has a 2-coil regulator unit on the top. One of the coils is a relay I think to prevent the battery from discharging through the generator (is that correct?). The other coil must be involved with some sort of current or voltage regulation I am guessing. There is a little external 20 amp fuse on this side as well which is held in place by a little bakelite cap. Also on the outside (on the side of the regulator base) is what appears to be a "bar" of ceramic material, about 1/4" thich, 3/8" wide and 2" long. It is anchored in place by two machine screws and the whole thing is part of one of the internal circuits. The bar seems to be eroded in its middle and is actually broken into two halves. My questions are: 1. What is this bar for and what is it made from? 2. Can I replace this bar with a new one, and where would I look to get one? 3. If I can't replace it as original, is there some substitute item that can be used?
