I worked in a small automotive dealership not to many years ago. It seemed, on these newer engines it made a difference what oil you used. We had trouble with people coming in with a newer engine and they would say "Just out of the blue, my car started using oil." The one common straw between all these people was, they recently changed oil brands. Ya, these people that change there own oil also cut a corner and don't put in the recommended brand or weight. Alot of them would say that they use the same oil in everything and haven't had trouble with this whatever kind of oil. Well, that was untill now. Paying the expense on an overhaul was a big enlightment for them. I wasn't a big believer in what kind of oil you use untill I seen several cases of this first hand working as a mechanic. When I bought my last pick-up I noticed that the previous owner had switched brands from recommended oil. Well it would use about 3/4 of a quart on an oil change. I switched back to vehicles recommended oil and the using oil went away. Some of these cases I have seen, there was a variance in engine damage from one different oil to another. I don't know if it was becuase of quality or the different ditergents clashing in changing brands but whatever the case it deffinately damaged engines. These newer engines that fit under these circumstances all went from not using oil to using oil shortly after changing oil brands. I strongly recommend using recommended oil brand and weight from the automaker. The newer the engine the more strongly I recommend it. On that older way back when stuff I don't think it is quit as important. I don't really know what changed the whole situation but something did. I think there might be so much more technology going into newer oils that they simply aren't made for just anything anymore.
