there are a lot of possibilities, and you will drive yourself batty trying to figure it out.. do yourself a favor and attach a good vacuum gauge to the engine and observe closely while operating if you get wildly fluctuating readings it is something MECHANICAL ie cam lobe bad,burnt valve,hole in piston, ect.... if it is fairly steady and smooth you can then look at other problems carb, timing,vacuum leaks, ect.. i drilled and tapped my manifold and installed a vacuum gauge and it helps tremendously to see exactly how hard the engine is actually working.
