MF 135 popping under load

My older MF 135 4cyl pops when you apply the gas. It's fine once it levels off. Ideas fine. New tune up. I'm thinking valve problem or a gas problem. Any ideas.

Is this a steady popping, back through the carb under load?
That is a sign of an exhaust valve not opening, flat cam, bent pushrod, etc.

Or a one time, random pop back through the carb?
That can be retarded ignition timing, lean mixture.

Exhaust pop can be a vacuum leak, erratic spark sending unburned fuel to the exhaust.

If a partial choke makes it better, try opening the main jet a little. It should take full throttle from idle without hesitation, a single puff of black smoke is desirable.

No it just seems to pop when you give it gas. It levels off and stops popping when it reaches the speed. I'm thinking it will pop under a load to but I haven't tried it yet

I had a truck that did that once, advance weights in the distributor were sticky and not moving as they are supposed to.

there are a lot of possibilities, and you will drive yourself batty trying to figure it out..
do yourself a favor and attach a good vacuum gauge to the engine and observe closely while operating if you get wildly fluctuating readings it is something MECHANICAL ie cam lobe bad, burnt valve, hole in piston, ect....
if it is fairly steady and smooth you can then look at other problems carb, timing, vacuum leaks, ect..
i drilled and tapped my manifold and installed a vacuum gauge and it helps tremendously to see exactly how hard the engine is actually working.

Ok now I'm thinking broken head gasket between number 1 and 2 cyl. When I run a compression test I have compression in both cyl when distrib is on number one. I assume this would cause the popping. Any thoughts??
