It's been in the news lately that the "authorities" (police) can acquire your location history (going back years) from the cell phone companies without needing a warrant. They are interpreting the language in a law from the 1920's concerning personal information. Apparently the whole issue is working its way to the Supreme Court.
Police have used the info to help prove that a person was at a crime scene, which begs the question can a person use as a defense that they were not at a scene if their phone wasn't?
I don't believe that turning off the GPS function helps much as the phone "checks in" with each new tower it finds. That is part of its basic function.
Keep in mind that cameras on desktop PC's have been hacked from the outside; no doubt in my mind that cell phone cameras could be hacked as well or even not so much hacked as being remotely toggled by design. They may see the inside of a pocket or could see whatever is going on.
