This is the first time my 1/2 inch 3 speed cordless hammer drill has ever quit working and took up smoking.
I had to take it apart. I could see the communtator was black. There was flash over, indicationg the segments were shorted together.
Now for the fun part getting apart. Even more fun putting it back together. It was a hot day, so I did some of the work inside.
Ever take a motor apart that has no bolts? I had my doubts that it would ever work again, but after cleaning the communtator and removing carbon from between segments, using a hammer and vise to put the end back on, it works great.
I question how long the fix will last, brushes are more than half gone. I question if I could buy just brushes for a motor that wasn't designed to be taken apart and brush wire is spot welded to brush holder.
I woke up this morning with little to do. This challenge took about half a day. George
