Dewalt 18 v cordless quits and started smoking

This is the first time my 1/2 inch 3 speed cordless hammer drill has ever quit working and took up smoking.

I had to take it apart. I could see the communtator was black. There was flash over, indicationg the segments were shorted together.

Now for the fun part getting apart. Even more fun putting it back together. It was a hot day, so I did some of the work inside.

Ever take a motor apart that has no bolts? I had my doubts that it would ever work again, but after cleaning the communtator and removing carbon from between segments, using a hammer and vise to put the end back on, it works great.

I question how long the fix will last, brushes are more than half gone. I question if I could buy just brushes for a motor that wasn't designed to be taken apart and brush wire is spot welded to brush holder.

I woke up this morning with little to do. This challenge took about half a day.

Amazing how much time we spend repairing something that should have been tossed out. Most people wouldn't do what you did maybe even myself. when things smoke that is usually not a good sign. Glad you repaired the drill. I spent about three hours repairing a stainless steel pump up sprayer. I had to find another to get some parts, and I had to make a new leather piston. but it works. 37chief,
I did just to see of I could meet the challenge. Didn't really have a lot to do today.

The end plate was crimped in place with 4 tabs that wouldn't bend. I actually bent the outer case to get the bell off.

I've taken small fan motors apart before to clean the bearings, oil and put back together. The fan motors were crimped together, but nothing like the thick metal of the dewalt. Not to mention getting the brushes out of the way when I put it back together. Then the 3 speed transmission was the biggest challenge.

I did an advance search on ebay, Found I could buy a new dewalt motor for $40, free shipping. Brushes are over $10 and I would have to go through prying the motor tabs to get end bell off, NO THANK YOU.

I have two 1/2 hammer drills. There is going to be a spare motor sitting on my shelf soon.

I wouldn't even try that. I had a hard enough time getting the starter on the 8N back together. Yeah, I forgot to put the little nuts on the end of the bolts as I pulled it back... Did give me a chance to clean it up and spend 2 hours trying to get those little brushes back in and get those little clips to all stay while trying with three hands to get it back together...lol Oh, and a few choice words from my Navy days!

I always have to invent a trick to get brushes and
springs back in place.

This time, I had to use .023 mig wire to pull up
on the brush wire to keep brushes clear to install
armauture.

Some times I use dental floss to get springs back
in place.

You are right, always need a 3rd and 4th hand.
