I change the oil on my Kawasaki 4010 mule every 100 hours. The oil filter is a 49065-2071, which costs a $15 at dealer, a little cheaper on line. When I google the kaw number there are many hits, all aftermarket filters, some the hated fram filter. So, after watching on U tube where BUBBA cut the filters apart and pees on the Fram, I'm not going to use Fram. Bubba results put Purolator near the top as the best made filter. So much for BUBBA's consumer report video, very scientific.
I went to a kawasaki forum. Some mule owners claim that a car filter, purolator PL14476 will work. Others claim that filters used on toyotas and other cars, can be us on the mule.
I noticed the old Kaw filter has a by pass valve in it, unlike the lawn mower filters, which those selling lawn mower filters, like the stens, claim they can be used to replace the mule filter. So, I leaning towards finding a good quality car filter instead of using the OEM kaw filter as long as the filter is equal to or better than the OEM filter.
The kaw filter has 3/4 x 16 threads, OD 2 11/16 x height 3 inches. There is plenty of room, so the heigth of the filter can be more.
My question is if it fits, will a car filter work?
If it fits, would a car filter be better to use on a lawn mower engine? I could use the same filter on my JD275 and 3 other brigg mowers.
Which car filter would you use? I know, BUBBA HATES FRAMS. BTW, frams have metal cages.
Anyway to get a cross reference # for a mule filter to car filters?
