I have sold a lot of stuff on Ebay. A single person can't bid against themselves and run the price up. It doesn't work like that. I have had many people make a bid but then rethink it and come back with a higher bid to be sure thay get the item. The current price, however, won't change unless someone else bids against them. Only then will the bid increase in whatever increment to be over that bidder. Example; An item starts at $1 and someone bids $75. The current bid will only show $1. The next person bids $5 but it will show the original bidder as the high bidder at $6. That competing bidder keeps bidding a dollar over but it only shows the original bidder as the high one at 1 dollar increments unless the amount gets over $75. The idea is to bid the maximum amount you are willing to part with for the item. Example; The starting bid is $1 and you bid $500. If no one else wants the item in the end you get it for $1 not $500. That's the way an auction system works. It's a gamble against others.
