OT--eBay question

Just noticed an item that has been listed for only 6 hours with 6 days 6 hours left.
There has been 6 bids all from the same bidder and the item has jumped from a starting price of $.99 to $199.00

Can someone explain this??

It is called shill bidding. You can look it up. It is not allowed by
ebay but it happens anyway, unfortunately. Probably a good item
not to buy, in my opinion.

(quoted from post at 21:31:19 01/25/14) He is bidding up his own item.

That's what I thought and yes he has only bought NINE items!!
Good to pass on this one and I will find another on later--cant use tractor in this weather anyway!!

If the item has a reserve price, the bidder is bidding small amounts to get to wherever the reserve is at. Done it many times myself. Pete

He is bidding against people that have given max.bid to ebay and those bids are not shown. Click on[ show auto bid] to see the other bidders. Chuck

It has been many a year since I bought of of ebay. That said I did it many a time, item listed with a very low starting bid but with a hiden reserve and the only way to figure out what the reserve is at is to do that very thing. Start out with the minimum bid acceptable and that will tell you if there is a reserve as it probably will not say it has a reserve untill you start bidding. and then go slow to find out what the reserve is because the reserve might be $1.00 more than what you thought your highest bid should be so when you find out what the reserve is you can decide if you want to try to get it at the dollar over reserve if somebody else is not interested in it and you might just make someother potential buyer not bid because he thinks you will go to any lengths to get it. And then it gets rid of the ones like are calling it a shill bid and it is not but they will not bid because of their beliefs. So good chances you will get it cheaper because of them.

Yep I've done it lots of times to find out the reserve price and I guess there is a bonus to doing it too as it keeps all the ebay conspiracy folks from bidding(LOL)

I have sold a lot of stuff on Ebay. A single person can't bid against themselves and run the price up. It doesn't work like that. I have had many people make a bid but then rethink it and come back with a higher bid to be sure thay get the item. The current price, however, won't change unless someone else bids against them. Only then will the bid increase in whatever increment to be over that bidder. Example; An item starts at $1 and someone bids $75. The current bid will only show $1. The next person bids $5 but it will show the original bidder as the high bidder at $6. That competing bidder keeps bidding a dollar over but it only shows the original bidder as the high one at 1 dollar increments unless the amount gets over $75. The idea is to bid the maximum amount you are willing to part with for the item. Example; The starting bid is $1 and you bid $500. If no one else wants the item in the end you get it for $1 not $500. That's the way an auction system works. It's a gamble against others.

EBay won't let you bid on your own item they have very good
protection against this. However you can get a friend to bid it
up just like at any auction. You can look at the full bidding to
see if this is happening. Also one person can set his high bid
and any lower bid that is higher than the posted bid will raise it
showing only one bidder check the part where it shows all
bidders.

JF in CT has it. If you think it's worth it, put a bid in for $1 more and see what happens. If you get the bid you will probably lose it at the last second when someone snipes it.

Some sellers put a minimum reserve price on an item. A single bidder can advance the bid until the reserve is met.

A single bidder can place multiple bids and not advance the bidding if there are no other bidders. The only time a bidder can raise the bid against himself is if he bids the reserve price or more. Even then the bid will only be the reserve price and not the maximum bid price if it was higher than the reserve.
