Does it stay in gear when you use it? If it does and you're only planning on very limited use shoving a plane around I don't think I'd worry about it. What I can tell you is that mission creep will negate any hope you ever had of opening that box up for 200 bucks. You could easily get into bearings, gaskets, shims, mabey an input shaft... etc. It'd be nothing to drop a grand in there or more. So if it works the way it is I'd probably leave it. If it's always jumping out of gear I'd probably dig in and repair it. If you do, make sure to replace the matching gear on the countershaft.
