Just wanted to get someone else"s opinion on the 4th gear of the H farmall I"m restoring. There is obviously wear from the attached picture, but do I need to spend to $200+ dollar it would take to replace it? When finished the tractor will be used to pull/push a 2500-3000lb airplane in and out of it"s hangar, so mostly reverse and 1st or second gear. The tractors been in my family since new and when it last ran I don"t remember any problems with 4th gear. What do you all think.

It's not pretty but I have seen worse. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. I would check the 5th gear splines on the inside front of the gear, if 4th has that much wear they might be almost gone, or maybe not depending on how the tractor was used.

Shifting on the go dropping from 5th to 4th because it can't pull a hill. It's a wonder they are that good ! Farmall must of used some good steel in those gears.

Do what your concious and wallet will let you.

If you are not going to use 4th gear then all it is used for is a spacer. Doing a fine job of that it seems. Then again you will never be closer to it than you are now. If money is tight skip it. If you want to do the job right change it out. If you are using it to move your airplane I suspect the first choice, money, is not the object. Fix it while you have it apart.

4th is the most commonly used gear, 5th is too fast and the rest are too slow to get any where.

The debate is $200 now, or totally tearing it apart again when you want/need to do it later at bigger cost. You are there now....

Only you know the answer there, I understand.

Does it stay in gear when you use it? If it does and you're only planning on very limited use shoving a plane around I don't think I'd worry about it. What I can tell you is that mission creep will negate any hope you ever had of opening that box up for 200 bucks. You could easily get into bearings, gaskets, shims, mabey an input shaft... etc. It'd be nothing to drop a grand in there or more.
So if it works the way it is I'd probably leave it. If it's always jumping out of gear I'd probably dig in and repair it. If you do, make sure to replace the matching gear on the countershaft.

I haven't looked into many tractor transmissions, but I've seen plenty of automotive gears. Most of those are the 1st-rev gears and the idlers, but I've seen some worn at least halfway through the tooth and still working. Unless you're going to use 4th constantly I wouldn't worry about it. The gear might only cost $200, but the rest of the parts and time will cost well over that. I say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
