In the 1980s I was lucky enough to be approached by a group of local veterans. The single purpose was to make sure that any local children of someone that dies while in service to this country has the financial support to go to college. It started out as 10 of use. There are now 25 of us. We also try to help those kids of service people disabled too. We kind of gauge how disabled they are and give accordingly.
We do not publicize what we do. Our group remains as anonymous as possible. Only the members know who the other members are. We take an oath to keep the other members secret. New members have to be agreed on by all of the current members.
We have a lawyer that donates his time and use of his office to administer the funds needed.
So far we have sent 38 kids through college in the last 25 years. Every single one of them graduated. If they are having other issues we try to make sure they are taken care off as well. Just making the connections needed is all that is needed most of the time.
We are not a Federal tax exempt slush fund. We just pass the hat among ourselves and some close friends an take care of what is needed. We do not write off any thing against our taxes. That way we are 100% in control of what we do. ZERO government involvement.
100% goes to where it is needed. Many of the national outfits have a high overhead cost so that little of the actual donations go where they are needed.
I DO NOT want any donations or anything like that. I just wrote about it to maybe get some of you to form your own group to do something in your local area. This can take many forms. Do it by yourself or join a group. This should include those that are disabled while on duty too.
Even simple things like household maintenance for the spouse is a big help. So put your thinking caps on and see what you can do personally. It is too easy to just send money to some national outfit and feel good. That is not what makes this country great. Help out those locals that answered the call!!!!
