My house was made in 1945. There was a air bleeder key semi welded into one radiator- in a corner of first floor. An old plumber told me sometimes the guys laying out the pipes back then just had to put in a complex triple jointed corner, and air will always build up in that one spot, it would take a lot, and make a mess of the woodwork, etc to make it right. So we bleed it, all the time, every winter, like the people before us, and the people will after us... Those expansion tanks do funky things as the furnace starts to really cook, might be best to keep it drained as much as possible? even if there is a place to overlow into. Maybe when the wood embers are super hot, the gauges go way up? That might do it? Mine might overfill when I fool with the aquastats to deal with my bigger horror show. I have a different problem - discussed on here last year, a skip for 5 seconds 12 seconds after starting. The guys that mentioned 'algae' win the cigar. Never used to be this far north, it is now. I had a sample analized- and because I buy a year's worth of oil in mid summer- I am cultivating the $%^& in the tanks! And even thought people think I am nuts, just tonight, one- the underground tank, less than half full now, after a nice warm day... the burner is skipping hardy one second... a nearly perfect cylce- 'cause when the weather is warm fuel oil burns just fine, when it gets cold (and you need it)... yeah.... get the wood stove going...
