If all you really need is a browser for internet use you could buy a new hard drive and install Linux. The reason for a new hard drive is so you still have the old one if you ever realize there was a file on the old one you really, really need. A new drive doesn't cost much and is usually easy to install.
Microsoft had (and kind of still has) a monopoly on business application software but browsers like Firefox and Chrome run just as well on Linux. You can get word processors and spreadsheets but they might be a little quirky. I'd start with Ubuntu Linux, it's real easy to install.
Find someone with a computer you can be reasonably sure is clean to download and burn the installation DVD for you. It's free. Or order one for a nominal price and be completely safe. Linux used to have problems connecting to wireless networks but it's getting better; connecting with a cable is always easiest.
