I believe John Deere replaced the bad Kohler KT 17's with an Onan engine which required a Kit that raised the motor mounts or something. This is a hard engine to replace because it has front and rear takeoffs on the crank. The front crank pully is used for the Lawn Deck through a 90 degree pully device that runs the mower. The Onan and Kit are very expensive at the last time I checked. I think they wanted something like $300 for the kit plus the engine making a total of something like $3000. I think the best choice is to put in a cheap engine in the frame and make it a trolley or tow vechile and just pull stuff behind it, but you may need to be a welder to change the motor mounts.
