Apparently there are three Kohler options when it comes to replacing a bad KT17. The KT17 series II, Command 18 OHV and Magnum M18. Since several of you have already made replacements, which option would you suggest and what are the pros and cons? By the way this is in a 682 Cub Cadet. Your comments would be welcomed and appreciated.

Try northerntool.com they list 2 variations of replacement engines for the KT17. I had one in my 85 Toro 117 Groundsmaster. Had lots of hours on it. Went bad a month after I ran it in a steep ditch. Boyd.

You can still get a shortblock can you not. Then use the part from the bad engine to fit it out.

Kent,

From what I have read, repairing the old KT17s are not worth the effort and time. I would rather go for investing in a decent engine and have a sound tractor for several years. I have time now to make the changes, but during the summer, I need a dependable machine.

I have a KT 17 series II I put on a 812 Gravely. My bother-in-law has one on a 317 John Deere. I think they are a good engine

The series II and the Magnum were essentially the same engines, which have been, or are being, phased out due to emissions requirements. The other choice is an OHV V-twin.

I believe John Deere replaced the bad Kohler KT 17's with an Onan engine which required a Kit that raised the motor mounts or something. This is a hard engine to replace because it has front and rear takeoffs on the crank. The front crank pully is used for the Lawn Deck through a 90 degree pully device that runs the mower. The Onan and Kit are very expensive at the last time I checked. I think they wanted something like $300 for the kit plus the engine making a total of something like $3000.

I think the best choice is to put in a cheap engine in the frame and make it a trolley or tow vechile and just pull stuff behind it, but you may need to be a welder to change the motor mounts.
