SC carb

I went to start my SC for the first time since about March so at least 6 months, it never started, kind of suprised me. Had gas in tank, had fire at plugs so I decided to pull the drain plug on the bottom of the carb. A whole lot of white gunk come out, what the heck. Pulled the gas line and the gas stunk, not like gas should just a bland smell. So I pull the carb and its a mess of white something inside. Cleaned the carb the best I could, drained the old gas out put fresh gas in, cleaned the plugs, still no start but gas conming out side of carb, checked and see small tear on the gasket.
So I am going to get new plugs and a carb kit. Whats good to clean a carb with and was there more then one make of carb on the SC? Any tips on doing a carb rebuid, never done one of them. Do you think I should rebuild carb or just a gasket set? Tractor did run well when I parked it, anybody else ever run into gas going bad that fast?
