I went to start my SC for the first time since about March so at least 6 months, it never started, kind of suprised me. Had gas in tank, had fire at plugs so I decided to pull the drain plug on the bottom of the carb. A whole lot of white gunk come out, what the heck. Pulled the gas line and the gas stunk, not like gas should just a bland smell. So I pull the carb and its a mess of white something inside. Cleaned the carb the best I could, drained the old gas out put fresh gas in, cleaned the plugs, still no start but gas conming out side of carb, checked and see small tear on the gasket.
So I am going to get new plugs and a carb kit. Whats good to clean a carb with and was there more then one make of carb on the SC? Any tips on doing a carb rebuid, never done one of them. Do you think I should rebuild carb or just a gasket set? Tractor did run well when I parked it, anybody else ever run into gas going bad that fast?
Thanks

Not all that surprising. Some gasoline goes bad pretty fast. I follow two rules regarding gasoline in my old tractors. 1) Never, but never, use gasoline that contains alcohol. 2) If a tractor is going to set unused for longer that 3 or 4 months, drain all the gasoline out of the tank, run the engine until it stops for lack of fuel and drain the carburetor. Sometimes on smaller, newer equipment I use fuel stabilizer. After an infestation, I've also started using a bacteria inhibitor in the Diesel fuel of my one Diesel rig.

The ethanol in gas is the worst thing the government has stuck their nose into. I drive 35 miles to get gas without it because of problems with it. It is corrosive cuts down on gas mileage. IMO

I know the Super A could come with a few different carbs. Zenith, Carter... and a couple different models of each.

Should be a brass tag on the carb that tells you what it is so you can get the correct kit.

Your gas source is not up to par; my SC stays in an unheated building year around (20 years) and is only used during our threshing show.
Last summer I took the carb off (thought it needed cleaning) and was surprised to see a CLEAN interior. Did install new gasket & needle/seat.
The white stuff you are referring to is likely excess water in your fuel supply. Or from your supplier.
I have used ethanol since it was invented and sold as "gasohol" in the 70's (I think) here in Minnesota.
Ethanol will clean/dissolve any garbage in the container it is placed in and absorb moisture until it becomes saturated and then will settle out leaving water-alcohol-junk on the bottom of the tank. As I said, check your source and storage containers for water & cleanliness.
Best wishes.

Carb does have a tag on it, number 771SA and under that has M1 with a 5 under it. A quick search shows it's a Carter carb. According to the tractor serial number the tractor is a 1952.
I do think the quality of gas is not very good at some places. I noticed with my van that my fuel mileage dropped whenever I got gas at one station but van started, ran fine. Wonder if I might have got the gas there, remember buying 5 gallons for the tractor. No alcohol gas sounds like a good idea.
Tractor has been sitting outside, was kept in an unheated garage since I bought it about 6 years ago and never had a problem. but left outside once weather started to warm up, needed the garage space. I guess being inside might make a difference but for years these tractors have set outside so think gas does make a difference.
Thanks all
