Use a magic marker or blue die and coat the bearing surface. Install them with enough shims removed that they are making contact with the crank journal. Rotate the crank enough for the contact areas to appear in the rod cap. Now you scrap material away from the contacted area and repeat the process until you have a bearing contact area that is close to being about 75% of the total bearing surface. Being a machinist, I made a shaft to fit the bearings onto before putting them in the enigine. I have only done this to one tractor and I still have not got it assembled enough to get it running.
