Got it all put together today. Yesterday I monkeyed up after putting on the pinion gear before putting the retainer & seal ring on first. Had to grab a puller lol.
After I got it on, I tested out the gear meshing with a scrap of .025 roof flashing. Gears bit deep, and the sound of it free spinning sounded a little rough. So I added in another shim. Retested and it bit a little less, still have a rattle sound from the gears (not grinding). NOTE: the shims I am using are paper gaskets I have cut. You think I should add in another one or just order metal shims off ebay? [below; right side of scrap is the first test..]
Gears are dry and not lubed yet. That could help with the sound I suppose. Wanted to check with you guys first before I put power to the PTO.
