Hi RTR, An easy way to test a mechanical tach is take your cordless drill and a round file like the one that is used to sharpen a chain saw, put the file part in the drill chuck and the squared handle part into the tach drive, you may have to trim a little off the handle so it fit the tach drive properly. Start the drill slowly in one direction and if there is no tach movement then try the other direction. With the drill running in proper direction RPM needle should work and hours will roll on. On the 424 with BD-154 the tach gear drives off the top end of the oil pump shaft. I have had problems with that drive gear assembly. There are two bevel gears at 90 degree to each off. The end of the shaft of the driven gear wears and the gears no longer mesh. Check the tach drive cable first.
