IH 424 Diesel Tachometer Problem

I have an IH 424 Diesel tractor I am going through and it runs great and all, but the tach isn't working. I unhooked the cable both at the tach and at the housing it fastens to. when I spin the inner cable in the sleeve, the other end turns which tells me the cable is good. From that troubleshooting I concluded that the tach gauge was the culprit....especially having that it had clocked over 3,500 hours when it had broken. I ordered a replacement tach, and when it came it was the wrong rotation direction. I decided to try it any way just to see if it was in fact the problem.....I just assumed it would read backwards. When I hooked it up and started the tractor, nothing happened.

Would that tach read the opposite way, or would it not work at all??

If that is not my problem, then what would it be??

THANKS FOR THE HELP!

The diesel tach turns the opposite direction compared to the one for a gas engine.

Most likely the needle cannot go below 0 rpm so turning the tach backwards will not move the needle. with the cable attached to the engine does the cable turn with the engine running?

Ok. Thanks for the input. So, my theory of the tach being bad is still plausable. I will have the hook up the cable and start the engine to check that. Just didn't want to poentially mess anything up . THANKS>

I had a similar problem on my 364 and found that the motor end of the internal cable was about 1/2 inch too short. It stuck out but only about 1/2 inch and needed to be about 1 inch. Seldom seen a tach go bad.

Just found out from my parts supplier that Steiner (where he gets the parts) does not offer a tachometer for the Diesel version of the IH 424. He also called 3 other parts suppliers and they did not carry one. He called the Case/IH dealer, and they said that it has been discontinued with them; and the only way to get a new one would be to find a NOS one in a dealer somewhere.

To me, that makes no sense to make a replacement tach for the gas version and not the diesel. This tractor was built in the late 60's up through the 70's. It is no where near old enough for this to be the problem.

What do you guys recommend I do now. Looks like if I don't find a working used one (I'm not even gonna attempt NOS because of the $$), I'm gonna have a huge hole in my dash since the non-working old one can't be used back (the studs broke off the old one when removing it).

Is there a tach for another IH tractor that is available aftermarket that will work with this one?? Even if the RPM's are SLIGHTLY off......just something close and that will work.

What did you do in that case? What caused it to be short?

Hi RTR,
An easy way to test a mechanical tach is take your
cordless drill and a round file like the one that
is used to sharpen a chain saw, put the file part
in the drill chuck and the squared handle part
into the tach drive, you may have to trim a
little off the handle so it fit the tach drive
properly. Start the drill slowly in one direction
and if there is no tach movement then try the
other direction. With the drill running in proper
direction RPM needle should work and hours will
roll on.
On the 424 with BD-154 the tach gear drives off
the top end of the oil pump shaft. I have had
problems with that drive gear assembly. There are
two bevel gears at 90 degree to each off. The end
of the shaft of the driven gear wears and the
gears no longer mesh. Check the tach drive cable
first.

Hope this helps

Ok, I went out and checked the cable. Took it loose at both places and it turns freely on both ends when turned by hand. I also checked it by hooking it up at the drive on the oil pump, and started the engine. With the engine running, tte cable did not move at the other end where it attaches to tach.

Does this mean that the old Tach should work? Does it mean that the gears aren't lined up in the drive part on the oil pump?

What is the best way to fix this problem without having to purchase a new "drive" assembly??
