Speaking of poor technique, I witnessed some of that years ago in Diesel school. There were several old 1-cyl. Witte disels in the shop. One day the insructor asked for a volunteer to crank one. A big husky lad stepped forward and proceeded to spin the Witte over with the compression released. After a few revs, he pulled the crank off and the big end of the 5-lb. cast-iron crank rotated around the handle and caught him right under the nose. He went down like a big tree and lay there twitching. The ambulance came and hauled him away, but he was back in class the next day, with a bunch of stitches in his lip and minus a couple teeth. The director of the school came down and took the crank away, so that ended our Witte section. Bottom line-cranks can HURT you if you're not careful, sometimes even if you are.
