In 1978, I was struck by a Farmall "H" crank on the left eye and cut for seven stitches... felt like getting hit with a maul. Eye went closed and turned black. I refined my technique after that. With an "H", I now make sure the tractor is in tune. I use the thumb technique described by another contributor and I only flip it one turn at a time. The way an H is built, you have to make sure that the crank is positively engaged on the crank pin, as that slides in to engage on the front pulley. There is also a grease nipple there for lubication. I also keep the oil to it. I always make sure my feet are well planted and I've got lots of elbow room. I know I got hurt through poor technique. I 've done lots of cranking since then with no ill effects. A strong battery and efficient starting motor are a great help.
