Hey guys, Went to start the machine tonight and all I got was a "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" noise.Well ,pretty much figured the starter drive was busted,pulled it out and sure enough it was broken right at the spring.Went ahead and tore it all the way apart,degreased it,sandblasted it,and looked it over,acid etch primer,and ready to order parts.
The rear cover bushing is worn,1 brush is worn funny(wasnt fully on armature????) Armature is perfect,little clean up and it is good.
My question is awhile back Jim Nicholson mentioned a better starter drive to seek out when rebuilding.He said it engages "softer"when starting on 12 volts????(Mine hits pretty HARD when I pulled the lever!)Where do I get these????
Also,when I took it apart,I failed to "capture" the shims/washers off of the armature shaft in the sequence they go on it.(They went everywhere! lol)There were 4 steel washers,ALL 4 of them have the same I.D. But 2 are the same,BIGGER O.D. and 2 are the same,SMALLER O.D. Anyone know how they go???? BTW,I am used to seeing a LEATHER washer inside a Delco starter on the rear cover plate,but maybe this is different on the bigger,tractor starters???(I am getting ready to "crack" opem my manual now!)
