Somewhere in all my stuff I read a technical discussion about what to do when switching from mineral to synthetic on my aircraft (Allison design with Rolls Royce name on it) and it talks about the problem of carbon shedding and seal leakage. Basically says not to switch from mineral to synthetic but makeup oil ok, i.e. a quart here or there won't hurt anything. If you have to switch is says to do so gradually.
I'm pretty confident that Rolls knows what they're talking about. FWIW we run BP 2380 which is a synthetic.
It's interesting that you could have the same problem with switching in a turbine that you do in a recip!
