Rebuilt Engine and Oil

I will probably start my 400D with rebuilt engine for the first time tomorrow. I have a bunch of 10W-30 Mobil 1 oil that I will never use, as it sits in 5 quart containers in my garage. Been there for 10 years. Nothing I have owned in the last 10 years calls for 10W-30.

Would it be OK to use it to run the engine for a couple hours to get it cleaned out, warmed up, then change out the oil to the proper 30W diesel engine type oil?

Is Mobile 1 synthetic????

The thing NOT to do is run synthetic, and THEN change out to regular oil!!!!!

Because of the differences in the oils,it will cause sludge. It will be hard on engine parts. I have talked to some real experts on this.

I would HIGHLY reccomend NEVER using synthetic oil at this point in time!!!

I wouldn't, you need a certain amount of friction for the rings to "seat". After the break in period then you would probably be okay running it.

You guys are right. I just talked to the guy that rebuilt the engine, and he said NO. Told me to use Rotella 15-40, as suggested by glennster. He said after break-in, run what you want (I was telling him 30W). Guess I'll just stick with 15-40.

Thanks everyone.

I would not use the 10w-30 to break in, though I do know what you are trying to do.

10w-30 will have less of the additives you want for the flat tappet cam and shaft rockers in the engine. Stick with a 15w-40 diesel oil or straight HD 30w oil. I know it's more expensive than using some oil you have sitting around, but your engine will thank you with longer service.

Here is some synthetic Mobil 1 information from some REAL experts.

My only question on using Mobil 1 synthetic as a flush oil is WHY ???? It sells for $8 per quart.
Sell it or use it , it's good for a minimum of 7500 miles or 1 years use in a gas engine.
Use a good diesel oil that costs half that much and has the correct additive package for a diesel engine.

as to synthetic oil like Mobil 1, there is no problem breaking in a new engine using it, or changing an engine from synthetic to mineral oil or back at any miles.

I changed my pickup from mineral oil to mobil 1 at 180,000 miles with no leaks or problems and broke in a new inverter generator generator on Mobil 1 last month.
It seated the rings and went to 0 oil consumption in 2 hours.
Myths about synthetic oil.

400D Guy, I will be the dissenting voice... No Rotella here at My Place, Dello 400, 15w40,only! Basically use a good multi or straight viscosity oil. I just don't see the need in a synthetic in a older tractor, Oil is cheap change it often and regularly!

Yea,

But what Im mentioned was switching FROM synthetic oil TO standard oil!
NOT a good Idea!

SAME with synthetic gear grease.BIG "NO NO".Unless the engine has been dis assembled and cleaned,I would not do it.

Probably a LITTLE non related, but I deal with many, many folks that build race engines that DO NOT reccomend using synthetic lubes in their engines.Synthetics are not fully proven in ALLL aplications.

I am sure you can find me info where some do though?
Staying on subject,I think the Rotella is just a better Idea anyway.

Somewhere in all my stuff I read a technical discussion about what to do when switching from mineral to synthetic on my aircraft (Allison design with Rolls Royce name on it) and it talks about the problem of carbon shedding and seal leakage. Basically says not to switch from mineral to synthetic but makeup oil ok, i.e. a quart here or there won't hurt anything. If you have to switch is says to do so gradually.

I'm pretty confident that Rolls knows what they're talking about. FWIW we run BP 2380 which is a synthetic.

It's interesting that you could have the same problem with switching in a turbine that you do in a recip!

From what has been explained to me,switching FROM mineral TO synthetic can be OK,B U T switching FROM synthetic TO mineral based oils is NOT GOOD!!!

Like I said I will NEVER use synthetic in any high performance engines I build.(I will hear about this statement,I am sure!)

I apologize for "high jacking" this thread.

Diesel engine + Shell Rotella 15-40 = GOOD!!! IMO

Now THAT is the good point John!

The BIGGEST issue with engine oil is that MANY people DO NOT service it regularly.

WHATEVER you end up using,be sure and change it at regular intervals.

BTW,I have heard good reports on the DELLO as well.

I used Delo in my diesel engines for years. I became concerned when they changed the label. I used Rotella for a while. I think both of these major brands have evolved into oil better suited for the newer engines.

I have been using Supertech for Diesel engines from WalMart. I feel that it is formulated more closely to the old Series III oil for my older engines.

He didn't either. He was contemplating using oil he already owned because you have to run the engine and drain the oil shortly thereafter when you do a rebuild.

BTW, 10-30 is used in a lot of lawn mowers (IIRC it is also the recommended oil for Honda small engines)

Mike, Yes, I can't complain about the Engines I have run Dello in...,
1982 Ford 3/4 T 4x4, 351 Winsor 125K to 300K (sold)
86 Chevy Suburban 350 from 85K to 240K (Sold)
97 Ford 1/2T,4x4, 4.6 V8 from 12K to 336K (currently)
01 Ford 7.3 DSL Crewcab, 4x4, 105 to 227K (currently)Here Dello is the oil of choice for 95% of all Ford 7.3 DSLs
1974 IH 966 3500hrs to 5000hrs (currently)
I believe we all pick a flavor we like best for some reason. Just change it Often,Both filter and oil, And some older engines you can pour in a gallon of DSL. after you have drained the old oil out let the engine idle for 3 to 5 min and flush the engine even more!
What is wild to me... You are as much on Rotella, As I am on Dello! I have come across guys that the have 100K + miles on their cars and truck and their oil of choice is....What ever oil that is on sale at the oil changing place when they get there the day they need to change oil!! Go figure!
Anyway....

I do that in my wifes Trailblazer. I don't even have it changed as much as Mike would recommened. Her TB gets at least 5000 miles on an oil change and goes to whoever has the cheapest oil change deal when SHE REMEMBERS TO TELL ME it needs an oil change. (That would be why it tends to go over.) Truthfully, I couldn't even tell you what brand is in it today. That filter is a pain to get to. :x

In my Powerstroke I only run Rotella T synthetic.

Yea,

I think the key here is MOST poeple I see that are passionate about there oil brand are ALSO just a religious about changing their oil,as well!

You ask a guy'"Whats your favorite oil"??? And he answers "whatever I can find cheap"!!!

I bet they DO NOT change oil VERY often??? (LET ALONE grease the front end of their vehicles when they have it in the air!!)lol
