This is not meant to be a smart a$$ answer, but something I have considered before, and have done with hydraulic oils.
Being as this is an old tractor (thus the lube oils were not very sophisticated at that time) and it has no hydraulic functions, but needs a hefty oil for the gears, I'd consider using a 90 wgt gear oil, diluted with 30 wt motor oil. But considering the age and wear on the parts, I'd be real tempted to fill it up with 85w-90 GL5 and call it good.
I am not an expert on this issue, so I throw this out only as a point for further discussion.
