Had both the 826 and the 686 - my 686 had the 312 later ones had the 310
The 312 is a Melrose engine - a smaller version of the 414-436-466 all wet sleeve engines. Also had a 966 with a 414
Great engines - direct injection and lots of power very durable and guess what still in use in International trucks DT466. Put a big battery on them and they start easy even in the winter. Just be very careful and keep the DCA4 additive up to spec and put on a water filter. If you don't you'll have milk for oil
The 826 were a great tractor also - mine was a hydro so plowing and disking were not its strength. Everything else - well not a better tractor was made.
The only comment on the 826 is that it is a hard starter in the winter. Plug in the block heater, put on the booster and spray the ether.
Once you get it started in the spring, it's great
The 686 is a lot newer of a tractor but still an old design - the design dated back to the original M back to the 30. Yes lots of improvements and upgrades - rock solid tractor - also it was very easy on the fuel
