These are the two tractors that i,am looking at now.The 826 3800 org hours cab german diesel,no water filter, dirty looking but not dented or anything missing. the 686 is at a dealer north of me,has had a new ta,and engine rebuild 1300 hrs ago.total hours around 7145,they wantaround 10,500 for that its very clean german diesel. So on the 826 fuel is getting into oil, fuel pump seal? Also that tractor has no water filter,do i worry about the sleeve orings? i could get this tractor i bet for around 7500.I know the hp isn't the same between the two,and i'am not comparing the two by size. just two tractors close to me. Do you think i will have problems with the 826 and no water filter, and fuel pump seal a problem? Just looking some opioions ,i know theirs tons of variables here between the two.just want to see what ya all think. Thanks

The engine rebuild and the new ta more than make up the difference between the two. I really like working the 686. It all depends what your using them for but the 826 could easily cost you more in the long run.

I have heard nasty rumors that the injection pumps on the German Diesels are NOT rebuildable, and replacement pumps are tough to find, not to mention expensive.

Just the pump fix will put the 826 within $1000 of the 686 if I am correct about this.

Frankly, I would pass on both tractors.

The 826 is a ticking time bomb.

The 686 is overpriced, and quite possibly a ticking time bomb in its own right; farmers don't trade in perfectly good tractors.

I would buy the 686 unless you need the extra hp. The 686 is a great tractor and you can do almost anything with it. I have a 686 and a hydro 86 and i wouldnt sell any of them.

Steve,

You'd better grab that 686 before someone else does. They are one he!! of a tractor!

And no, it's not overpriced; maybe a little low in fact considering it has a new engine and clutches.

You said the 686 had a german engine also? I might be wrong but I was thinking the 666 and the 686 had the american 312 motor. They used the German 310 in the late 706 and the 756. The 826 has the German 358 that they also used in the 886 and the 3288 thru 1985. Never heard of water getting in the oil on the german motors like the 400 series motors, (414 436 466)

I agree with Allan , That 310 is just ready to go to work at 1300 hrs., It will do anything you want to do and you will look good doing it .

I've been using mine to feed cattle here the past week.

Sure wish I could find another ICB cab, but those things are gettin' a little scarce. :>)

I'am going to take a closer look at that 6,the one farmer has two of the 686 one of each motor. He did loke the german more just the way it the rpms went up quicker. He told me if i don't by it he may too have a third one around. Thank ya all

Had both the 826 and the 686 - my 686 had the 312 later ones had the 310

The 312 is a Melrose engine - a smaller version of the 414-436-466 all wet sleeve engines. Also had a 966 with a 414

Great engines - direct injection and lots of power very durable and guess what still in use in International trucks DT466. Put a big battery on them and they start easy even in the winter. Just be very careful and keep the DCA4 additive up to spec and put on a water filter. If you don't you'll have milk for oil

The 826 were a great tractor also - mine was a hydro so plowing and disking were not its strength. Everything else - well not a better tractor was made.

The only comment on the 826 is that it is a hard starter in the winter. Plug in the block heater, put on the booster and spray the ether.

Once you get it started in the spring, it's great

The 686 is a lot newer of a tractor but still an old design - the design dated back to the original M back to the 30. Yes lots of improvements and upgrades - rock solid tractor - also it was very easy on the fuel

I like them both - rock solid tractors

Good luck
