That fropnt main seal will require splitting the front casting away from the crankcase, and removal of the crank pulley and timing cover. The seal on that one is pressed into the back side of the timing cover.
For the rear axle, they did tend to leak first at the tranny end of the axle. Somewhere in life, I think I've heard that the felt seal at the outer end of the axle was felt so that it could soak up any oil that made its way out there without showing up as a leak. Some would tell you to pump the zerk on the outer end full to stop the leak. It does stop the leak from what gear oil rides the shaft to the outer end, but its primary purpose is to lube that outer bearing, not to provide a grease seal against an oil leak.
