Opinion: what is happening to people

Posted by Tom Fleming on June 20, 2010 at 05:51:12 from (206.193.253.243):

I have been looking back on a number of controversial posts.

Which spark plugs should I use?

What oil should I use?

Should I crank start?

12v vs. 6v? alternator vs. Genny?

From my perspective:

1.) Champion or Motocraft or AC. Not sure I have a preference. I do know that whatever plug you like, if you don't change them or gap them correctly when they need changed, doesn't matter what brand you didn't choose!

2.) Keeping your oil and filter changed appropriately is WAY more important than the brand you use. Straight weight or Multi-vis, not sure it matters. viscosity, yes, important no matter what brand, HD or not, and the viscosity choice is based upon season, and use of the tractor (show queen, or down and dirty work horse).

3.) Like any piece of equipment, if not used properly, you ARE going to get injured. If you are not going to take the time to learn how to do it properly, then DON'T do it. But if done right, your likelyhood of being injured is no riskier than crossing the street.

4.) I don't think 12v vs 6v that one is any better than the other. This one all depends upon what you want to accomplish. You want original? 6v genny. You want convenience? 12v alternator. Pick one. But once again, depends upon what your end game is. Both work well if properly maintained/setup.

Some of us have been around for awhile and around the block a few times. There are lot's of new people showing up on this site everyday, that don't have the years of experience or degree from the "school of hard knocks" that we do. It is one thing to provide an answer......it is another thing to also explain "why". In the above 4 topics, often the posts and replies don't explain "why". I wish the world was always black and white. The older I get, I see more shades of gray..........just like my hair!

Have we gotten sooooo wound up in marketing hype and "Hey, lookie what I can do!!!!!" that plain old common sense has been lost?
